Welcome

What is the Upland Caves Network?

A discussion group that will bring together people with a common interest in caves, including cavers, geologists, archaeologists, palaeontologists and museum curators.

Why bother with caves?

Caves are unique environments that contain important records of environmental and cultural change. They have been used by humans for leisure, burial and ritural purposes for thousands of years. Upland Britain has many caves of archaeological interest, with deposits dating from before the last Ice Age through to the Medieval periods.

What will the Network do?

Bring together people interested in archaeological and other aspects of northern caves for a series of meetings, to share viewpoints and information on caves in the region. The Upland Caves Network is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and will run for two years. We depend upon your support and interest to make it a success.

How can you get involved?

There are two parts of the network:

1) The next meeting will be held on July 1st - 2nd 2010 on Cave archaeology, past present and future. The programme and registration details can be found on the 'meetings' page.

2) This website – set up to provide a focal point for information about cave archaeology and related subjects. Details of the meetings can be found here.

If you would like more information on the Network please contact Hannah O'Regan.
